Pray for Wisdom

If you lack wisdom, James 1:5 states that you can pray and ask God. He will give it to you liberally!

My daily prayer since I was a little girl has been for God to give me wisdom and understanding. Proverbs 4:7-9 states that wisdom will promote you and bring you honor. If you pray for wisdom, there's no need to pray for wealth, long life, or favor. Those things will come because you have wisdom.

Wisdom is supreme—so get wisdom.

And whatever else you get, get understanding.

Cherish her, and she will exalt you;

if you embrace her, she will honor you.

She will place a garland of favor on your head;

she will give you a crown of beauty.

-Proverbs 4:7-9

Pray for your children to have wisdom. We can pray for our children to be wealthy, to have perfect health, and to be full of favor - but what good is any of that if they don't have the wisdom to handle it well? Above all else, pray for wisdom!

Proverbs urges us to seek wisdom and understanding. Instead of shame, it promises that we’ll have a crown of glory on our heads.

“Take firm hold of instruction...do not let go; keep her, for she is your life.” Proverbs 4:13

Sometimes wisdom tells us to be quiet and listen and learn. Sometimes wisdom tells us it's time to shout truth from the rooftops. As we've already talked about here, discernment is the key to obedience. We will receive discernment when we pray for wisdom.

Jesus is coming back soon, and wisdom is in short supply these days. We must look at how we're living our lives and ask God for wisdom. What do we need to do to prepare for His return? To prepare for the possibility that we or our loved ones will live through a time when the church in our own country is persecuted? What steps should we take and what things need to stop? It's time to seriously consider these questions. There's no reason to be afraid when God promises His people wisdom. He warns us ahead of time so we can prepare.

What would the church look like if all Christians sought wisdom and understanding before we spoke or acted? What would the church look like if we sought God about the future and prayed for the wisdom to handle that information well?
